  • Value of Low Glycemic Index Diet Proven

    Add Comment

In a move that will surprise few, researchers have published scientific proof that a "low glycemic index" diet does a good job of controlling blood sugar levels. The researchers compared the results of a low glycemic index diet with that of a diet simply high in fiber, and found that the Glycemic Index diet kept blood sugar down, as well as improving cholesterol.

The Glycemic Index ranks carbohydrates on a scale of 1 to 100, based on how much they raise blood sugar levels after being digested. Carbohydrates which are low on the GI scale are typically slow to digest, and slow to absorb. High GI carbohydrates hit your blood sugar levels hard and fast. For example, All Bran Cereal has a glycemic index of 8, while straight glucose has a glycemic index of 100. In other words, it's about quality, not quantity.

When it was introduced in the early 1980s, the Glycemic Index was a radical new way to categorize food.

  • Trouble Controlling Blood Sugars?

Have you ever considered an insulin pump? Here in the US, almost every insurance company will help finance the cost. Better blood sugar control. Less shots. Eating when and what you want. Maybe you should check it out.
I'm an Insulin Pump Therapy Consultant and I also wear a pump. If you have any questions or concerns about insulin pumps that you've been wanting to ask, please reply. If you'd like to talk on the phone, we can figure that out later.
Thanks and good luck with your diabetes,
    JL

Hello everyone.... I've got a special favor to ask... My son, Jeff, is doing a high school project for "Participation in Government". He had to develop a proposed "social policy", and trying to help dear old Dad, he suggested that the federal government should pay for diabetic medicine & supplies, based on the premise that better control will result. and thus lower the overall costs of long term diabetic complications.. What do you all think about such a policy.... and he has to submit name, address, position, organization, phone #, of everyone who wants to participate.

  • TDZ Therapy Medications Doubles Risk of Fractures

    Add Comment
Common oral medications used in type 2 diabetes patients have recently undergone studies. Studies from Wake Forest University School of Medicine and University of East Angela have concluded that thiazolidinediones (TDZs) used by the elderly and post menopausal women over a course of a year have now doubled their chances at fractures.

Women aged around 70 years old with type 2 diabetes who have taken this medication for a year or more, one additional fracture would occur among every 21 women. Those women who are around 56 years old and have taken TDZs for a year or more resulted in one additional fracture for every 55 women. The concern is that the agents in TDZs are doubling the risk for those that are already at a higher risk before the therapy.

Thiazolidinediones or TDZs are medications to control diabetes by lowering your blood sugar levels. Common drugs that are widely prescribed that fall into the thiazolidinedione drug family are Rosiglitazone also called Avandia TM made by GlaxoSmithKline.

Hi, I just started on Lantus insulin at night about 3 weeks ago. At 1st all was going well. But the last 2 weeks my sugars have been running high. Okay in the morning but then 200's before meals. I have been taking Humalog before meals. I am feeling pretty discouraged. Maybe I just need to to stick with it and keep increasing the dose of Lantus. Does anyone have experience they can share with me? Thank=you

  • Managing Diabetes and Depression

    Add Comment
More than 16 million Americans suffer from both diabetes and depression. Individuals diagnosed with diabetes are twice as likely to develop depression issues. Depression can be dangerous for diabetics as it can lead to poor physical care and negative mental functioning. This means that a person with diabetes mixed with depression could run the risk of being more likely to neglect proper care procedures and routines to manage their diabetes. Managing your depression is possible and essential if you want to get your illness and life back on track.
Depression is defined as a serious medical condition that effects the ability to function in everyday life. It can happen to anyone at any age or stage in life. Those that are diabetic are believed to have more depression issues due to the metabolic effect of diabetes on the brain. Generally episodes of depression are caused by excessive stress, major or difficult life changes or side effects from medications that you are currently taking. All causes of depression can be worked with to help you overcome the intruding blues.
Talk with your doctor if you feel that your depression is starting to take over.
