Omega-3 is essential to forming and maintaining healthy cell membranes. If the cell membranes become unhealthy, devoid of omega-3 and full of trans fat as a substitute, they become "stiffer" and insulin is unable to transport nutrients inside the cell. This is one of the causes of type 2 diabetes. If you have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, it is extremely important for you to eat enough omega-3. If you can't get it in your diet, taking an omega-3 supplement is very important. Most people take fish oil for omega-3 but an even healthier source is krill oil.
Primitive people ate a lot more omega-3 and the human body is designed for a high level of omega-3. Primitive people ate lots of fish which are high in omega-3. They also ate fresh game which is very different in composition than the modern farm meat available in most supermarkets. Deer, elk, and other wild animals tha forage on grass and other vegetation are much higher in omega-3 than cows that eat corn and other grains. Primitive people also ate much more green plants from the wild and these too contain a fair amount of omega-3.
The modern diet is much too low in omega-3. In fact, there have been various studies that analyze the diet of Americans and it has been proven that many Americans get very little omega-3, far below the level that they should be getting. It is very important to eat omega-3 if you to reverse diabetes or prevent it. Try to eat salmon, fish, dark greens like kale and spinach, and grass fed beef. Blue green algae is another good source of omega-3.
