Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile on-set or insulin dependant diabetes mellitus (IDDM), develops when the immune system destroys pancreatic beta cells-the only cells in the body that produce insulin.  This form of diabetes usually strikes children and young adults, although the disease can occur at any age.  Risk factors for type 1 diabetets may be autoimmune, genetic or environmental.  There are no known ways to prevent type 1 diabetes.
